Henning Koppel (1918-1981) was an artist and designer whose work is lauded as emblematic of modern Danish design. Trained in drawing, watercolour, and sculpture, Koppel began working in jewellery and flatware with Georg Jensen at age 27. His skills as a draftsman allowed him to produce striking renderings of his designs, creating a fascinating body of standalone two-dimensionial work. Koppel balanced the rigid principles of functionalism against his own occupation with organic forms and curvilinear shapes. The result of this tension was the creation of some of the 20th Century’s most enduring designs – from clocks and watches to sensuous tableware.
