Tomita was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1965. He followed a degree in industrial design at Chiba University in Japan with a Masters in furniture design at the Royal College of Art in London.

In 2000 he became art director for Covo, a job which included designing and constructing the Covo shop in Rome.
