Antoni GaudÃÂ is one of Spain’s most renowned
architects. Born in 1852, he moved to
Barcelona in 1869 with his older brother where he completed his schooling and
enrolled in the Provincial School of Architecture in 1873. After graduating from his architect’s diploma
in 1878, Gaudi set up his own firm.
Gaudi considered every detail in his work and incorporated into his
architecture such crafts as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging
and carpentry. Under the influence of
neo-gothic art and oriental techniques, Gaudi became part of the Modernista
movement which was reaching its peak in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. His work differed from the
mainstream Modernisme, through drawing on his observations from nature and use
of organic forms. Gaudi was more likely
to create three-dimensional scale models and moldings than draw plans. Some of Gaudi’s more famous work includes the
Bellesguard Villa, Park Guell and the Sagrada Familia.
