This toast rack is truly one of the strangest moments in the entire history of design.

Whilst this edition was produced by Alessi in 1991 the original by Christopher Dresser was designed in 1878. For those of you who know a little of the history of design you may now pick up your jaw from the floor. This minimalist take on the toast rack is a good 40 to 50 years before its time.

We've not previously seen any designed object so clearly anachronistic however if anyone out there has please let us know as this one's totally doing our heads in. In the height of Victorian England's fascination with frou-frou and doilies along comes a man who beats the Bauhaus by nearly half a century.
